Settlers first began settling in the Brown Deer area in 1835. These were people who began farming the lands. In the beginning, many were from a town in New York named Granville and that gave it its name back then. By the 1880s, people had started calling the area Brown Deer but it wasn't until 1953 that the area was officially incorporated.
Much of Brown Deer's real estate is from the 2nd half of the 20th century. There are starter homes available as well as mid-range and executive homes. Most homes in Brown Deer, WI will be priced anywhere from around $130,000 through around $400,000. The area mainly has single family homes and condominiums.
Downtown Milwaukee is just a short drive from Brown Deer, WI. It is only about 15 minutes. The area has a number of parks. One in particular is Brown Deer Park which is home to the Greater Milwaukee Open. 2000 census data put its population at 12,170.
